My work grows from nature and story.  Memories of places I’ve been inspire me, but I am not recreating a place, bird or person that exists.  These are spiritual impressions; glimpses of remembered or imagined sensory experiences.  Every image in my work has multiple layers of meaning.  The delicate veins on a leaf help me see the world more fully and bring me a sense of wonder and joy, even as I re-imagine that leaf as a road-map to further revelations.

With the motion and gesture of my free brush-strokes or cutting into the wood blocks, I want to create the sound of wind blowing through leaves in the trees, of flapping wings overhead, of sailing a boat through the waves  For me, making art is a way to explore, to inscribe, to celebrate, to leave something behind.

My imagery often begins with folk tales, history or music as a stepping-off place.  My intention is for my work to have an immediate, sensory impact, followed by a gradual spooling out of stories and meaning, much like a conversation sparked by attraction, that takes place over many years of time.
