Letter Signed by Maimonides, 1170, Egypt
Letter Signed by Maimonides, 1170, EgyptThis is a letter signed by Maimonides!  If you read Hebrew, you can clearly read his signature (Moshe Bar Maimon) at the bottom.  The letter was drafted by his secretary in Judeo Arabic (Arabic language written in Hebrew characters).  It was written in Egypt in 1170.  It's a plea intended to be read aloud to Jewish communities to raise funds for a ransom for captives held by pirates.  This was a common problem in those days, and Maimonides' stature and eloquence helped move people to dig deep.

Letter From Judah ha-Levi, 1125, Toledo
Letter From Judah ha-Levi, 1125, Toledo This letter, written in the hand of Judah Ha-Levi, was to Halfon ben Nathanel al-Dimyati in Spain.  From the Met text panel:  "Judah ha-Levi rose to prominence in Toledo as an esteemed physician, community leader, scholar and poet.  The defining theme of his writing is his love for Zion.  In this letter, written in his own hand in Judeo-Arabic (Arabic written in a Hebrew script), he tells his friend, 'I have no other wish than to go East as soon as I can,' a dream he realized in 1140."
