Judith Joseph’s rendering of the Greyhound bus of 1961 affects me deeply. At first, what I notice about it are its vibrant colors and the sensation of “twinkling”, evoking in me expectancy and hope. Then the small child letting go of her mother’s hand draws my eye. To me, she embodies the dream of moving beyond her parents’ burden of segregation. I love this painting. It was created as a magnificent tribute to Oprah Winfrey. But its power lies in the fact that it honors the courage of women who risked everything so that those who came after them could move beyond the past. This painting reminds us not to forget that past or the people, particularly the African American women, who challenged a way of life and altered the future.
